Hair Loss/Thinning Hair

About Hair Loss
There is another important difference in the quality of the new hairs. Instead of being as thick as the previous hairs, they are being replaced by thinner, finer versions of themselves. This is a process called miniaturization. The combined result is then two-fold—not only are the hairs less thick, but they stay in the actively growing phase for shorter periods of time. As the owner of these hairs you are getting less and less bang for your buck!
Without any treatment male and female pattern hair loss can be chronic and progressive. This means that the hairs will continue to thin and that the amount of time they are in the actively growing phase will continue to shorten. Overa the anagen phase as possible. However with pattern hair loss the follicles become lazy. They want to spend more and more time resting in telogen and less time growing in anagen. As the time hairs spend in anagen shortens, hair may appear to shed more. This is because the hairs are essentially turning over more rapidly.

Genetic Causes of Hair Loss
Male and female pattern hair loss runs in families and is considered ‘polygenic,’ meaning it comes from many different genes from many different ancestors. Both hormones and genetics play a part. The most common cause of long-standing hair thinning is male and female pattern hair loss (also known as androgenetic alopecia, AGA). The term androgenetic combines the fact that both hormones and genetics play a role.

Hair Loss in Men
Hair loss in men can appear as recession of the central hairline, recession along the temples, thinning in the vertex (crown), or a combination of all of these. By starting treatment early, men can often slow down the thinning process and even regrow a significant amount of hair.

How Quickly Does Hair Thin?
The rate of thinning is difficult to predict. Some may present with a rapid thinning over 6-12 months while others may develop thinning slowly over a decade or more. This is also determined largely by genetics. For many people their hair loss is unmasked by some major physiologic event such as having a baby or going on a crash diet.
Reasons for temporay hair loss (Telogen effluvium)
Post-Pregnancy The most common form of temporary hair loss results after childbirth. Instead of shedding during pregnancy, resting telogen hairs remain in the scalp. This results in thick, luxurious hair during pregnancy. However, 3-6 months after the baby is born, telogen hairs will be released from the scalp, all at once! This can result in a massive shed that can be very distressing and result in quite noticeable thinning. Women can be reassured that after another 6-12 months their hair will usually grow back. If it does not, they may have some underlying female pattern hair loss that has been unmasked by the telogen effluvium.
Other common reasons Surgeries & general anesthesia, high fever/prolonged illness, crash dieting, medical problems, changes in thyroid hormone function (hyper-or hypo-thyroidism), low iron stores have been linked (but not proven) to cause hair loss, low vitamin D has also been suggested (but not proven) to cause hair loss, autoimmune conditions such as lupus, dermatomyositis, or collagen vascular diseases, some medications, birth control, stress.

Treatment Hair Loss - Redken Cerafill & Framesi Densify
Instantly Increase Hair Thickness
Cerafill Dense Fx provides an instant thickening effect on the hair shaft—it’s like gaining 9,000 more hairs after one use! Filloxane in the formula plumps up existing hair to increase diameter by 9% and instantly create the look and feel of fullness. Optimize Nutrition While there is no ‘recommended diet’ for great hair, it is essential that your body receive all the required daily nutrients for overall good health. A daily multivitamin can generally provide what most individuals need. There is data that supports the role of biotin in improving hair health, because infants who lack this in their diet can develop a patchy alopecia. Most people get sufficient amounts in their diet, but adding it as a vitamin cannot hurt. Other supplements possibly linked to hair thinning include zinc, vitamin D and iron. Before starting any of these, you should consult with your doctor. Lifestyle Factors While everyday stress does not cause hair loss, major physiologic stress certainly can. It is worth looking at your life to make sure you have a healthy balance of work and play. While there is no evidence that getting a weekly massage will help regrow your hair, it is important to make sure you have enough time to take care of yourself, eat well, exercise and have time for relaxation. You can also take significant steps to help protect your hair from the elements. This can involve wearing a hat when you are outside, spritzing hair with an SPF spray, and minimizing the amount of heat and chemicals applied to the hair. Beware of the risks of overexposure to ultraviolet rays, wind, cold and pollution because they can all have an effect on your hair’s appearance. Protecting it from the elements is just as important a step as the products you choose. *Information about hair loss adapted from Redken.ca |
Styling tips for thinning hair
* Blow-dry with a round brush, directing hair up and away from the scalp.
* Blast-dry hair focusing on the roots, then finish with a medium round brush.
* Diffusers are a great way to create soft volume when drying wavy or curly hair. Use a gentle, circulating motion.
* To enhance fullness on the top of the head, make a deep side part or create a zigzag part.
* For added volume, set hair with Velcro rollers for 15-20 minutes. Velcro rollers are gentle on the hair.
